Vaslav Zimpel - clarinetist, bass clarinetist, composer 

 

Born in 1983. He studied classical clarinet with Prof. Zdzislaw Nowak at I.J.Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan (diploma with distinction in 2008)He studied also with Prof. Johannes Peitz at Hochschule für Music und Theather in Hannover. On polish music scene Vaslav Zimpel debuted with jazz quintet Emergency, searching his own ways of musical expression, based on jazz tradition and contemporary classical music. His very personal musical language is mainly influenced by works of such artists as Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Anton Webern, Igor Stravinsky, Peter Brötzmann, Witold Lutoslawski. Zimpel uses very unique ways of building harmonic and melodic structures combined with strong emotional expression. He cooperated with main avant jazz musicians from different countries: Ken Vandermark, Mikolaj Trzaska, Theo Jörgensmann, Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Mark Tokar, Johannes Bauer. He has recorded his firs album "The Light" with Wojtek Traczyk on double bass and Robert Rasz on drums for polish label MultiKulti. "The Light" met with general approval in polish press.  He performs also classical music. He won Grand Prix on III Zachodniopomorski Festiwal Klarnetowy - national polish clarinet competition.

He graduated from the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. Since 1998 he has been composing music for various casts: Zróznicowanie (Differentiation) for two bassoons and clarinet, Rondo ą la krakowiakfor screaming pianist and bass clarinet, Malowanie (Painting)fortwo clari nets, bassoon, double bass and singing, Suite inJewish style for clarinet, violin and double bass, cycles of compositions inspired by languages of theworldforviolin, clarinetand cello, and musicfordrama and puppet theatres (about 25 productions). His creative projects include installations, writing theoretical texts on the subject of authorial theories, radio plays and underground films. He is actively involved in improvisation and interpretation of contem porary music. He has appeared as soloist with such ensembles as: de Ereprijs, Silesian Quartet, aukso Orchestra, Podlasie Philharmonic. He has participated in the International Summer Courses for New Mu sic in Darmstadt, where he presented his authorial performance tech niques on bass clarinet. 
He has been a co-founder member ofthe Kwartludium ensemble. Since 2008 he has been working on further expanding the sound po ssibilities ofthe bass clarinet, taking inspiration from the beatbox and collaborating with one ofthe best Polish beatboxers, Patryk TikTak' Matela.

 

Paweł Szamburski  - clarinetist, composer.

 

plays clarinet and bass clarinet. Studied Cultural Anthropology and Musicology. He is an active member of Warsaw's independent music scene and music association “ LadoAbc ” ( www . ladoabc . com ). He formed a group of the auditory wilderness explorers - „ Horny Trees ” (www.myspace.com/hornytrees) . H e is a founder of „Djazzpora” project, a periodic presentation of contemporary improvised music and visual arts in Poland . In his solo work „ Repeat One” Szamburski composes music for amplified and prepared clarinet. He is also active in many other musical projects , including Meritum , Ircha , Tupika , SzaZa , Cukunft . He makes music for film , theatre , and silent movies ( incl . " Auto Da Fe" dir . Pawel Miskiewicz , „ Sentimental Piece for 4 Actors“ dir. Piotr Cieplak , " Marzenie " dir . Peer Anders Ring , " Salamandra " dir . Georgi Roszal , "Stars falls in August" dir. Marcin Liber ) . He played or otherwise co- operated with such established musicians as: Tomasz Stanko, Mikolaj Trzaska, Paul Brody, Noel Akchote, Pavel Fajt, Dj Olive, Raphael Roginski, Jacek Namyslowski, Tomasz Duda, Patryk Zakrocki, Macio Moretti, Bartosz Weber, Waclaw Zimpel, Kuba Kossak, Sebastian Wypych, Michal Górczynski, Hubert Zemler, Roman Slefarski, Maciej Bielawski , Josquen Roset , Norbert Kubacz , Dj Lenar and many others…

 

Mikołaj Trzaska -  saxophonist, bass clarinettist,

In 1989 he started studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Painting Institute in Gdansk in Wlodzimierz Lajming's atelier. Fascinated by jazz from the 60-ties, especially by music of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman he left the Academy and devoted himself to music. In the same year he joined the group of the bassist Tymon Tymanski "Sni Sredstwom Za Uklanianie". This group was a germ of the biggest ferment in Polish jazz of the 80-ties and the 90-ties – "Milosc". 
1992-2001 cofounder and saxophonist of Milosc, one of the main pillars of so called yass scene. The group cooperated with among others Lester Bowie and Tomasz Stanko. He recorded five albums with Milosc.
In 1993 he tried his hand at composing and as a leader, he founded Loskot which made its debut on the first Gdynia Summer Jazz Days Festival.
In April 1994 together with Ryszard Tymanski they founded duet Maslo, known of pure nonsense sense of humour. They performed their favourite rock and jazz standards in variuos, often strange versions.
In 1996 Mikolaj started a yearlong cooperation with Swietliki – a group from Cracow recording an album "Cacy, cacy Flaeish Mashine" with them. Later he decided to cooperate with Marcin Swietlicki in a project, which combines poetry with improvisation on saxophone and bass clarinett.
In 1999 project The Users together with Robert Brylewski, Marcin Swietlicki, Ryszard Tymanski, Milo Kurtis. and Jacek Olter. Album "Nie Idz Do Pracy" (Don't Go To Work) was recorded then.
In 2000 they recorded an album "Cierpienie i Wypoczynek" (Suffering and Leisure). Ttogether with his wife Ola Trzaska founded a publishing house Kilogram Records, which publishes Mikolaj's albums and impro-free jazz music.
In 2001 he started cooperation with Andrzej Stasiuk, writer and publicist, after years of common experiences they published an album entitled “Kantry”.
2001- 2004 he cooperated with an instrumental – composing duet - Marcin and Bartlomiej Oles. Their first album "Mikro Muzik" is thought to be a very important event in contemporary Polish jazz. Next albums are “La sketch up” and Trzaska's album with participation of Oles brothers – “Danziger Strassenmusik” – recorded on the streets of Gdansk. In 2003 when he was in Ukraine he created a music – literary project with an outstanding Ukrainian writer and poet Yuri Andrukhowych. The result of their cooperation is the album “Andruchoid”
In May 2003 on the Festival in Dublin he started a long cooperation with Austrian cellist Clementine Gasser.  In September 2003 during his stay in Scandinavia Trzaska started a permanent cooperation with musicians who form Peter Brötzmann's rytmical section - bassist Peter Friis Nielsen and drummer Peeter Uuskyla. They recorded albums (2004) “Unforgiven north” and (2006) “Orangeada”. In April 2005 Peter Brotzmann joined the trio. In this way North Quartet was founded and the album „Malamuth” was recorded. Also in 2004 he founded a trio with Danish musicians Peter Friis Nielsen and Peter Ole Jorgensen. In April 2007, in Copenhagen, the premiere of their common album „Volumen” published by a Danish publishing house Ninth World Music took place.
In May 2006 project Shofar with participation of guitarist and composer Raphael Roginski and drummer Macio Moretti was started. The idea of the project was to find a common denominator for traditional Jewish music and contemporary creative jazz. In 2007 their album “Shofar” was published. In Autumn 2006 he started cooperation with Joe McPhee and Jay Rosen with whom he recorded album “Intimate conversations”. In 2007 he played a common concert tour with Trio X, and shortly after that they recorded material for a common album under a working title “Magic”.
In October 2007 on the occasion of Gunter Grass' 80th birthday he created an orchestra consisting of thirteen people -Mikolaj Trzaska Mottlau River Band, the orchestra performed a suite devoted to the writer in St John's church in Gdansk. In November 2007 he was invited to international project of Ken Vandermark „Resonanse”, where he cooperated with Tim Daisy, Steve Swell, Magnus Broo, Yuriy Yaremchuk, Marek Tokar, Dave Rempis, Michael Zerang and Per-Ake Holmlander. In 2007 he founded a quartet with American pianist Noah Rosen, Danish drummer Peter Ole Jorgensen and Belgian double bassist Peter Jacquemyn – they recorded an album as Trzaska/Rosen Quartet and had a concert tour in Poland and Ukraine.
In January 2008 he recorded an album in trio with Peter Brotzmann and Johannes Bauer. In Spring 2008 drummer from Chicago Tentet - Michael Zerang joined the duet with Clementine Gasser. The album is to be published this year ../.
